Interview with Coach Bonnie

We’re incredibly fortunate to have so many amazing coaches, so we wanted to start giving them more in-depth introductions! This way, you can learn more about their backgrounds and what they love about teaching. This week, we’re excited to introduce Coach Bonnie!

1. Can you share a bit about your journey—how did you get started in teaching?
I actually started a group fitness club back in high school with a few close friends. After that, I joined the Army. When I transitioned out of the military, I knew I wanted to make fitness my full-time career. I began training clients, leading group classes and bootcamps, with the goal of helping people prepare for Spartan Races. It’s always been important to me that my training style is both accessible and inclusive.

2. Have you had any mentors or key influences that shaped your coaching and teaching style?
Definitely. When I was a junior, I took a bootcamp class at a local college with a coach named Dave C (add last name) He was incredibly passionate about what he did, and that energy really stuck with me. It inspired me to want to bring that same level of enthusiasm to others.

3. What classes do you currently teach, and who are they designed for?
I teach obstacle course classes, which are great for intermediate to advanced athletes—especially those who love parkour, Ninja Warrior-style challenges, or Spartan races. I also lead bootcamp classes focused on high-intensity interval training and functional fitness, which are open to all levels.

4. What goals or outcomes can students expect from your classes?
Improved coordination, full-body strength and integration, better performance in obstacle-based activities, and just moving through everyday life with more confidence and less pain.

5. How would you describe your teaching style in three words?
Inclusive, encouraging, fun

6. How do you tailor your approach to meet the needs of different individuals or groups?
I always offer a variety of options and modifications. I try to get a sense of where each person is starting from so I can guide them in a way that feels supportive and challenging, but never overwhelming.

7. What sets your classes apart from others in the field?
I bring a lot of experience to the table, but more than that, I focus on keeping things playful and adventurous. I believe in keeping your mind as engaged as your body—so it’s not just a workout, it’s an experience.

8. Can you share a favorite success story or a moment you’re particularly proud of in your career?
One of my proudest moments was training my mom after a serious knee injury—she ended up completing Rugged Maniac, an obstacle course race. During the pandemic, I also worked with a student who was really afraid of working out because of gym anxiety. I helped them find a way to fall in love with fitness without ever stepping into a gym.

9. What’s your favorite part of teaching and coaching?
I love showing people new ways to move their bodies—ways they might never have considered. Creating those “aha” moments where someone realizes they’re capable of more than they thought!
